Zia, Picacho, Mayfield Students Win VFW Essay Contests

Students from Zia and Picacho middle schools and Mayfield High School won top prizes in 2013-14 essay contests sponsored by Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post #10124 of Las Cruces and its ladies auxiliary.

Students recognized with awards at the post’s honor banquet held April 5, 2014 are:

•In the 19th annual Patriot’s Pen essay competition for students in grades six-eight: First place: Miranda Sanchez, Zia Middle School, received a certificate, Patriots Pen medal and backpack, $100 prize; second: Charlotte Florez, Zia, received a certificate, Patriots Pen medal and $75 prize; and third: Juliete Perez, Picacho Middle School, received a certificate, Patriots Pen medal and $50 prize.
•In the 67th annual Voice of Democracy scholarship competition for high school students.: First Place: Austin M. Martin-Likes, Mayfield High School, received a certificate, medal, fountain pen, dog tag and $100 prize.. Austin also won the district essay competition, for which he received a $100 prize. He finished second in the state competition and received a $750 scholarship award.
